Freshman point guard Kingston Flemings delivered a breakout performance, and top-ranked Houston survived a late scare from No. 22 Auburn, pulling out a tense 73–72 win Sunday in a matchup between last season’s Final Four teams.
Flemings led the Cougars with 22 points and came up with one of the game’s biggest plays, blocking Auburn guard Tahaad Pettiford on a drive on the final possession. Chris Cenac Jr. added 18 points and nine rebounds, helping Houston improve to 4–0 on the season.
Houston controlled much of the second half, building multiple eight-point leads, but Auburn refused to go away. Playing before what felt like a home crowd at a neutral site, the Tigers stormed back late and had two looks to steal the win in the final seconds. Pettiford drove twice and was turned away both times by Houston’s defense, then Auburn’s last-second lob attempt was knocked away at the rim as time expired.
