Sport Parenting#19: Work with your child s coach in partnership

There was a time when the idea of the "perfect" coaching environment was to be able to work with a group of talented, committed, hard-working, passionate athletes, in a world class sporting facility - built right next door to the world's largest orphanage. In other words, to be able to coach athletes - and not have to deal with parents - was the coaching version of "heaven". However, things have changed...and for the better. These days we talk about the Performance Partnership: A child focused "team" of coach, athlete and parent - working together to help the child realize their potential. As it is with all successful partnerships, it is important that each member of the Performance Partnership understand and perform their role to the best of their ability. The role of the coach in the Performance Partnership is to lead and guide the athlete in physical, technical, tactical and mental development. The athlete's role in the Performance Partnership is to do the best they can do - whatever that may be. The role of the parent in the Performance Partnership includes helping the child to develop values such as honesty, respect, humility, courage, commitment, confidence and integrity. Parents also play a critical role in the Performance Partnership by helping to teach the child such essential life-skills as independence, self-responsibility, time-management, the capacity to accept accountability for things they do and say (and don't do and say), the fundamentals of good nutrition and the importance of getting enough sleep. When it comes down to it - all three "partners" - play a significant and important role in the child's development and helping to create the environment and the opportunity for the child to realize their sporting potential. If coaches are exceptional at coaching - and can inspire the hearts and minds of athletes through emotional connection AND Athletes give all they can to all that they do AND Parents are outstanding parents - loving, valuing and accepting their child unconditionally for who they are - NOT for what they do - then the child's success in sport - whatever that may be - is assured. ====== Wayne Goldsmith Coaching http://wgcoaching.com Waynes coaching, thinking and teaching have influenced some of the world’s leading athletes, coaches and teams . Sport Parenting#17: 3 Phrases Sports Parents Need to Avoid

Sporting Parents - i.e. the parents of kids who play sport - generally mean well. They like to say things that they believe will help their child improve their sports performance or inspire the child to get better at training and competition. However, there are three phrases commonly used by Sporting Parents that you need to AVOID at all costs. 1. The "Old Days" Phrase: Whilst it's tempting to try and connect with your kids by sharing your own sporting experiences with them - they don't care about the "old-days". They only care about what's happening now - and the experience they're having with you right now. 2. The "You Could Have Done Better" Phrase. Kids do not deliberately perform badly. By telling them they could have done better, you're actually saying that "it's not good enough". Telling a child "it's not good enough" is often mis-interpreted by them as hearing you say "YOU'RE not good enough". And that is the last thing you want your child thinking. 3. The "You're Not Good Enough" Phrase And this leads me to the worst of all commonly used Sporting Parent Phrases - actually saying the words "You're not good enough". Of all the things a sporting parent can say to their child, this is the most appalling. It's like giving them poison! Telling a child "You are not good enough" not only destroys much of their sense of self-belief but in the longer term damages their ability to develop confidence and even worse will put your future relationship with them in jeopardy. So what are a few things you can actually say to kids about their sports training and competition? How's this? "I love watching you train and play football". or even better... "I love you. Now let's go get an ice-cream". The influence of parents - what they say - and what they do - can be the most powerful force for personal development in the child's life. You can inspire them to be remarkable children and wonderful human beings. Or you can lay the foundations for a lifetime of shattered confidence and a lack of self-belief. WHAT YOU SAY - AND HOW YOU SAY IT MATTERS! This is a practical exercise I do in my Sporting Parent education program. Imagine you're walking down the street 20 years from now. It's a bright sunny day and walking in the opposite direction - walking directly towards you is your son or daughter. Ask yourself - "what would I like to see?" When I do this "Future-Family" exercise in my Sporting Parents workshops and seminars, unanimously parents will respond, "I'd like to see a big smile on their face. I'd like them to be happy to see me. I'd like them to be happy with their lives. And I'd like them to be great moms and dads". Almost never - does anyone say "I'd like to see my Future-Son or Future-Daughter rich, successful and standing there with an Olympic Gold Medal around their neck". So what does that teach you? Stop talking to them about the "old-days". Avoid telling them "they could have done better" And above all stop telling your kids they're doing it wrong! Just love them unconditionally, value their efforts and their enthusiasm and accept them for who they are. Sport Parenting#16: The 3 Most Important Tips for Parents

I've been talking with Sporting Parents all over the world for 25 years. South Africa, England, Scotland, many cities around the USA, South Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Fiji, The Philippines, Canada, Spain, all over Australia....there aren't too many places I haven't presented Sporting Parents clinics, lectures and workshops. And in all that time and in all those places, I've learnt three very important lessons - three things that will help ever parent be an outstanding, loving, supportive Sporting Parent and help them to help their child realize their potential as human beings - and as athletes. 1. Love your kids unconditionally. Seems like an obvious one but it never ceases to amaze me how many parents have never actually told their kids that they love them....that is, they love them for WHO they are and NOT for what they do. I hear many stories of parents telling their kids they love them - IF the child has just scored the winning goal or IF they've just broken the State high jump record or IF they've won the Gold medal for the 50 metres freestyle event at school. That's not unconditional love - and only valuing winning and success sends some pretty terrible messages to your kids. Perhaps worse of all - if the child feels they're only loved when they succeed, they'll do all they can to receive that love - and they start to believe that unless they're successful - they will not be loved. Spend a little time researching "teenagers and mental illness", and "teenagers and perfectionism" and other similar conditions on the Internet and you'll find that often at the heart of so many of these terrible issues is one simple truth: it comes down to the child's ability to love, value and accept themselves for who they are. And guess where they learnt that? Look in the mirror! PLEASE - do me a favor - before the end of today - tell your child - in person - by phone - by email - by text - doesn't really matter how - just do it - that you love them for no reason other than they are your child. Not for what they do - but for who they are. 2. "Build" them as human beings. Help to develop values, virtues and character. Provide opportunities for them to learn to take (safe) risks and teach them how to deal with failure and disappointment. Create situations where they learn independence and to take responsibility for their actions and in-actions. Encourage them to accept accountability for the things they say and do - and that they don't say and do. Focus on helping them to become remarkable human beings - then - if they happen to be able to kick a football or throw a pitch or swim a lap or hit a ball - that's a bonus. Put the development of the person - ahead of the development of the player. 3. Teach them that there is no difference between winning and losing. If your child's team wins by 10 goals and they score 5 of them - love them with every fiber of your being. If your child's team loses by 10 goals and they play terribly - love them with every fiber of your being. They must know with absolute certainty that win or lose - there's no difference in the way you feel about them. This concept - i.e. there's no difference between winning and losing as it relates to the way you feel about your kids - underpins so much of their "Self-belief" - and helps to build resilience, confidence and a deep personal sense of courage to take on any situation as they get older. Check out my new book "Leading without Leading" now available as a paperback and an e-book on Amazon. The book focuses on helping people to learn to Lead by simply being themselves.
