After starting the season 2–13, the sixth-seeded Vikings have surged through the postseason and are now headed to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2015. East Hall used a three-point barrage from Cooper Barton and relentless defensive pressure to pull away in the second half, delivering one of their most complete performances of the season. GAINESVILLE STAYS PERFECT The Gainesville Red Elephants continued their dominant season, defeating the Johns Creek Gladiators 58–46 to capture their second straight Region 7-5A championship at Chattahoochee High School. Senior Brandon Nelson led the way with 23 points, including a huge 13-point second quarter off the bench that helped Gainesville flip a 19-16 deficit into a 34-22 halftime lead. The Class 5A No. 1-ranked Red Elephants improved to 27-0 and locked up the No. 1 seed in the GHSA state basketball tournament. Gainesville’s defense played a major role in the win. • Six total blocks anchored the paint • Charlie Gersmehl – 3 blocks • Kevin Curtis – 3 blocks A relentless full-court press and defensive pressure kept Johns Creek out of rhythm throughout the night as Gainesville pulled away to secure another region title. ? CHEROKEE BLUFF ADVANCES The Cherokee Bluff Lady Bears delivered a dominant performance, defeating the Jefferson Lady Dragons 50–34 in the Region 8-3A semifinals at The Arena in Jefferson Georgia. Cherokee Bluff jumped out to a 6–0 start and never trailed throughout the matchup. After Jefferson briefly tied the game at 9–9 behind two early three-pointers from Abbey Kinlaw, the Lady Bears took control. A 15–2 run in the second quarter, sparked by Claire Carlson, helped Cherokee Bluff seize momentum. The Lady Bears continued to pull away in the third quarter as Bristol Kersh led another 15–4 scoring surge. After last season’s late run to the Class 3A state championship, Cherokee Bluff appears to be following a similar script in 2026 as they continue their push through the postseason. ? JEFFERSON ADVANCES The Jefferson Dragons basketball stayed perfect in Region 8-3A play with a 55–42 semifinal win over the Monroe Area Purple Hurricanes basketball in Jefferson Georgia. Jefferson jumped out fast with a 12–0 run to open the game and built a 24–10 lead early in the second quarter, setting the tone early in the matchup. After finishing the regular season 10–0 in Region 8-3A, the Dragons avoided the upset and secured their place in the Region 8-3A championship game. Head coach Kevin Morris praised his team’s gritty approach following the victory. “They are a scrappy group. We don't always win real pretty, but it's been effective this year for sure.” Jefferson now prepares for the Region 8-3A title showdown with momentum on its side.
