It took 43 years for their first one and just 12 months for their second. The Adelaide Giants have defended their Claxton Shield and are Australian Baseball League Champions for the second year in a row. Adelaide defeated Perth 3-1 in front of a packed crowd at West Beach to seal the deal. Briley Knight led the Giants offense going 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk, including the game winning 2-RBI double in the bottom of the eighth. Andrick Nava continued to rack up his hot streak with two hits of his own.

It was another classic. There were four lead changes before the sixth inning. Quincy Latimore put the Giants up for good with a two run homer - on his birthday nonetheless. The team's were operating on almost no sleep after an unbelievable travel day.

The Perth Heat defeated the Adelaide Giants 4-3 in a 13-inning contest that last 4 hours and 10 minutes. Cincinatti Reds prospect Carlos Sanchez sent a game winning RBI-double down the line in the 13th to put the Heat up 1-0 in the best-of-three series. They can win the Claxton Shield Saturday night in Adelaide. The game ended at 11:10PM in Perth. Both teams will depart for the airport from their hotel at 5:00AM for a 7:00PM game two in Adelaide. This game - like this whole weekend - oozed toughness. The Giants threw seven pitchers. The Heat used six. Both teams made excellent defensive plays to prolong the game. Tom Bailey pitched the final three innings for the Heat, not allowing a run, and striking out three. "I think just one of those days - when you're on you're on. Everything was working. I knew the boys would eventually got it done, I was just try to get a hold," says Bailey. "I'll go home, get a little sleep, and head to the airport. We don't take anything for granted." Carlos Sanchez had 2 runs batted in, Nehomar Ochoa Jr had four hits, and Tim Kennelly had a clutch two-out RBI for the Heat. Phillies' prospect Andrick Nava led the Adelaide offense with three hits. Perth scored early and held a 3-0 edge heading into the sixth inning. Quincy Latimore levelled the score in the sixth with a 2-RBI base hit. Then, nearly seven innings of scoreless baseball. Both teams had chances, but neither could capitalise until late. Game 2 goes Saturday night in Adelaide at 7:00PM local time.

Perth Heat 5 (2-1) def Brisbane Bandits 4 (2-1) Tim Kennelly’s power bats lead the Perth Heat back to the Championship Series! In a game that went down to the wire, the Perth Heat will now be looking to seek revenge for the Claxton Shield. Perth Heat starter local West Australian and 2023 WBC Team Australia member Jake Bowey got himself in a bit of a pinch to start out with a leadoff hit-by-pitch that eventually loaded the bases with two outs. But he was able to get out of the inning unscathed with a forced flyout. Bowey finished his outing with 2.0 scoreless innings, two hits, a walk, and three strikeouts. The Heat took no time to get runs on the board in the bottom of the first. After a four-pitch leadoff walk by Tampa Bay Rays prospect Odalys Peguero, local West Australian and 2023 WBC Team Australia member Tim Kennelly launched a ball into orbit on a 2-2 count to make it an early 2-0 ballgame. After the bases were loaded with two outs, local Queenslander and Team Australia representative Sam Holland came into relief and prevented the Bandits from giving up any additional runs in the inning by inducing a lineout. While Holland gave up three runs in the 5.0 innings he pitched, he also struck out seven, and was crucial in keeping the game within reach for the Bandits. Tim Kennelly showed why he is the All-Time Home Run King in the ABL in the bottom of the second by blasting a solo shot out of the park for back-to-back home runs. Kennelly finished the game without letting a single ball in play, going 2-for-2 for two home runs with two walks. When asked about his performance, Kennelly remarked, “Well obviously we knew it was win or the season is finished. It was pretty bad last night so I knew I had to come out tonight and from the first at bat I needed to set the scene. I was lucky enough to hit one out to set momentum for the rest of the game.” In the top of the fourth, Kansas City Royals prospect Hyungchan Um was able to be brought home after a leadoff double off a fielding error, making it a 3-1 ballgame. In the following inning, a clutch RBI triple by Milwaukee Brewers prospect Tayden Hall on a shot to left field allowed the Defensive Player of Year, local Queenslander, and Team Australia member Logan Wade to come home, reducing the lead to just a single run. The Heat were able to regain their two-run lead in the bottom of the sixth. It began with a leadoff bunt single by local West Australian and 2023 APBC Team Australia member Jess Williams, who then proceeded to steal second base, and was advanced to third on a ground. Williams was then able to come home after Odalys Peguero legged out a single after the batted ball bounced off the mound to give him enough time to reach first. After Kennelly worked his second full count walk of the evening, Peguero was able to continue using his speed on the basepaths by scoring from second off a single to right field from local West Australian and Team Australia member Alex Hall. But still, the Bandits would simply not back down. Rookie of the Year, Helms Award Finalist, and 2023 APBC Team Australia member Alex Skepton worked a full count leadoff walk, and scored from first four pitches later off a Dermot Fritsch double to center field, who then advanced to third from a Logan Wade single. While the Heat were able to induce a groundout double play, Fritsch was able to score from third, bringing the score back to a one-run game at 5-4 in favour of Perth. Unfortunately for the Bandits, they were absolutely stymied in the eighth inning by Jordan Martinson, who struck out the side on thirteen pitches. Martinson pitched 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing just a single hit while striking out three. The game was closed by Tucker, who retired the side to save a spot for the Heat in the Championship Series. “It is awesome to get back to another Championship Series. Last year was disappointing not to win the whole thing but we’ve got some revenge due so hopefully we can go one better this year,” stated Kennelly.

Brisbane Bandits 12 (1-1) def Perth Heat 9 (1-1) The bats were on fire today with six home runs between both teams. But it was the Brisbane Bandits who steal Game 2 in the offensive battle. The Bandits wasted no time in getting a run out of the box, with Dermot Fritsch launching a 2-run home run on a 3-2 count to put Brisbane up early in the first. Perth quickly responded in the bottom half of the first inning. Tampa Bay Rays prospect Odaly Peguero was able to get a leadoff single on the first pitch. Two pitches later, local West Australian and Team Australia member Alex Hall tied the game with a 2-run home run of his own. The Bandits had to go to their bullpen early with local Queenslander Connor MacDonald off a horrific injury on a comebacker to Bandits starter Ryan Bollinger. With two runners on base after local West Australian and 2023 WBC Team Australia member Jake Bowey drew a walk, Byron Armstrong was able to put two more on the scoreboard for the Heat with a 2-RBI double to make it 4-2 in favour of Perth. Armstrong would finish the game a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs. Regrettably for Perth, they dealt with a buzzsaw in the middle innings, the ABL Relief Pitcher of the Year, Milwaukee Brewers prospect Sam Gardner. In 3.1 scoreless innings pitched, the most he has pitched all season, he allowed three hits, two walks, while striking out five. In the top of the fourth, Milwaukee Brewers prospect Tayden Hall was able to get on base with a leadoff single on the first pitch and advanced to second on the groundout. He was then brought home off an RBI double from Kansas City Royals prospect Hyungchan Um to cut the lead to one. Um finished the game going 3-for-5 and an RBIs. After a walk by Kansas City Royals prospect Milo Rushford, Will Riley was able to tie the game by bringing Um home off an RBI. With runners at the corners with one out, a single by ABL Rookie of the Year and Helms Award Finalist Alex Skepton to right field on an 0-2 pitch allowed Brisbane to retake the lead 5-4. Perth once again would quickly respond in the bottom of the fourth. Back-to-back singles by Byron Armstrong and Houston Astros prospect Nehomar Ochoa Jr. followed by a walk by Cincinnati Reds prospect Carlos Sanchez loaded the bases with just one out. An RBI single by Odalys Peguero brought Armstrong home, tying the game once more. With both teams exchanging blows back-and-forth, Brisbane followed up in the top of the fifth by batting around the order. It began with a leadoff single on a full count by ABL’s Defensive Player of the Year, local Queenslander, and Team Australia member Logan Wade, who jogged home off a Tayden Hall 2-run opposite field home run. Tayden Hall would finish the game 3-for-4 at the plate with a walk and two RBIs. With two outs, back-to-back singles by Hyungchan Um and Milo Rushford allowed them both to be brought home by a Will Riley 2-RBI double on a 2-2 count to make it a 9-5 game for the Bandits. Brisbane was then able to tack on two more runs after an Alex Skepton walk with another 2-RBI double, this time from Dermot Fritsch of a 1-2 count, to bring Logan Wade back to the plate. Fritsch finished the game going 2-for-3 at the plate, leading the Bandits with four RBIs. Alex Skepton made it a 7-run lead for the Bandits in the top of the seventh with a solo home run with two outs. Skepton finished the game going 3-for-5 from the plate with a walk and two RBIs. When asked about their performance, Bandits manager Shayne Watson commented, “We relied on our determination and resilience to get us through and get everything moving and build that confidence up from last night to tonight.” But the Heat refused to go down without a fight. In the bottom of the eighth, Nehomar Ochoa Jr. was first able to reach first from a passed ball strikeout and was brought home two pitches later on a line drive home run by Carlos Sanchez, making it a 12-7 game. In the bottom of the ninth, 2023 WBC Team Australia member Ulrich Bojarski was brought home after getting on base with a single off a hard-hit 2-run home run from Jake Bowey, cutting the deficit to three. Bowey finished the game going 2-for-3 at the plate with two walks and two RBIs. Unfortunately for the Heat, local Queenslander and Team Australia member Sam Holland was able to close out the game as a win for the Bandits by inducing two flyouts to the outfield, forcing a Game 3. “The bats came out pretty hot, but just our resilience to come back from [the 7-0 loss] sets up pretty well for tomorrow,” added Watson.
